Goodwill Industries has partnered with Green Music Group and The Roots to promote a great way to make eco-friendly changes in your life: by donating your unwanted clothing and household items.
All this week The Roots are encouraging fans to donate unwanted clothing and household items to Goodwill. Take the challenge by noon ET on Friday, May 21st and you could win DJ Hero plus a $300 Best Buy gift card. You will also be entered for a chance to win a Honda Insight Hybrid!
Green Music Group is a coalition of musicians, industry leaders and music fans using their collective power to bring about widespread environmental change within the music industry and around the globe. For more information, or to register for the contest, visit Green Music Group.
I switched my monthly desktop calendar from February to March today. I was excited to start a new month with new projects but then I realized something. March Madness is upon us! And since Greensboro is hosting the 2010 ACC Tournament, you could say the college basketball frenzy has really hit us hard.
We’ve got some huge basketball fans here at Goodwill. We’ve got UNC alums and Florida State super fans. In fact, I bet if I looked hard enough I could find a fan for each team in the ACC. And since Goodwill employees love the ACC, we were pretty sure that our customers would really love to get in on the ACC Tournament action. So in the spirit of March Madness we figured out a way to send 10 lucky donors to an ACC Men’s Tournament game!
On Saturday, March 6th we’ll be holding a Donation Drive at the Goodwill Donation Center located at The Village of North Elm (301 Pisgah Church Road, near Chick-Fil-A). We’ll be accepting donations at this location from 8:00am – 6:00pm. When you donate clothing or household items you will eligible to put your name in a drawing for a pair of tickets to a Tournament game. The best part of the whole thing is that we will be drawing names every hour! That’s 10 chances to win!
It’s a win-win for everyone. You get a chance to win tickets to an ACC Tournament game as well as get a head start on spring cleaning. We use your donations to fund our job training centers in the Triad. For more information about the job training opportunities we offer to the community visit www.TriadGoodwill.org.
Personally, I’m not impressed with The Pepsi Challenge. I can identify a Coke by the sound and smell before it even touches my lips. That skill has prevented a lot of unpleasant first sips in restaurants where they substitute Pepsi for Coke without asking.
The Goodwill Challenge is much more difficult. You can find the same brands and styles at Goodwill that you can find in any major retailer. The difference? At Goodwill, the clothes are gently used and cost a fraction of the price. In fact, it would be so difficult to identify a Goodwill item in a lineup next to new items that I’m not even going to ask you to do that.
Here’s what we’re asking you to do: wear one Goodwill item every day next week. It could be a shirt, pants, jacket, accessory, etc. Then tweet about it and mention @TriadGoodwill. For every day that you tweet, you’ll be entered into our drawing for a Cheesecakes by Alex gift certificate.
Details:
- Monday – Friday, 11/16 – 11/20
- Wear an article of clothing from Goodwill
- Tweet about it and mention @TriadGoodwill
- Each tweet will equal one entry into a drawing (limited to one entry per person, per day)
- The winner will be drawn and announced on Friday at 3:00pm
- The winner will receive a $20 gift certificate to Cheesecakes by Alex
- Goodwill employees may participate, but may not win
Go shopping! Get dressed! Tweet! Take The Goodwill Challenge!
Yesterday, we saw tons of costumes at the stores — clowns and bearded ladies, bubble gum and shoes, doctors and patients — and they were all fabulous. I’m a softie and I wish everyone could win, but it is the nature of a contest to have winners and losers. When we were looking for our winner, we wanted to see participation from the entire group and crazy creativity. You can see all the contestants on Flickr, but let me tell you a little bit about our runners up.
The Battleground Avenue Store won second place as the cast of the Adams Family movie. They had the entire crew — Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsly, Uncle Fester, Cousin Itt, and even Thing. As you can imagine, creating these costumes took quite a bit of effort and creativity. To make Thing, they built a box with a cutout on top for the hand to come out of. Not only did the entire staff dress up, but they decorated the store, played the movie’s theme music, got into character, and stood by the road to welcome shoppers.

You must be wondering why they didn’t win first place. Well, it was a tough call. Read on.
The Eugene Street Goodwill Store won first place as the ghosts of Deadside High students. When we got to the store, the school principal told us about how she was the lone survivor of a school bus crash. Then she introduced us to the nerd, the goody-two-shoes, the cheerleader, the football star, the school nurse, and the coach. She told us about each of their fates and whether they went with the Grim Reaper or the Angel. We liked the spooky spin on stereotypical high school characters, not to mention the creative story and convincing role playing. The store looked great too, with the name of the high school posted above the register, spiderwebs everywhere, and candy for the customers.

Today, we will be at the Eugene Street Store to help them celebrate their big win. The Smiling G Mascot will be at the store from 11:00am until 1:00pm with treats for everyone. We hope to see you there!
Most people enjoy searching for the perfect Halloween costume. Most people look forward to putting all the pieces together and then, on Halloween night, debuting their outfit for all to see. Well, Goodwill employees aren’t any different. Except they don’t stop at just Halloween costumes. Goodwill employees like to show off their Halloween spirit by decorating their stores to create the best Halloween atmosphere.
On Friday, October 30th some of the Goodwill stores in the Triad are participating in a Halloween decorating contest. These select locations will not only have their stores decked out in spooky decorations but the employees will also be sporting their Halloween costumes for all to see.
The store with the most Halloween spirit on Friday will win a Halloween party on Saturday for the employees and all their customers. There won’t be any tricks involved, but there will be treats for everyone. Plus the Smiling G Mascot will be making a special appearance.
The participating store locations are:
- Eugene Street Store in Greensboro
- High Point Road Store in Greensboro
- Battleground Avenue Store in Greensboro
- Lexington Avenue Store in High Point
- Church Street Store in Burlington
- Asheboro Store
- Mebane Store
- Eden Store
- Yanceyville Store
Maybe your favorite Goodwill store is on the list. If it is then you’ll certainly want to stop by on Friday and take a peek at their Halloween costumes and decorations. You’ll also want to follow Triad Goodwill on Twitter and Facebook to find out which store will win the Halloween party on Saturday.
It’s not a chicken dinner, but you could win two tickets to Wet ‘n Wild. If you don’t know what to do with your Labor Day, you will want these tickets — it’s going to be a scorcher. Here’s what you do:
- Retweet on Twitter, comment on our blog, or post on our Facebook wall “I love Goodwill”
- Each RT, comment, or post counts as an entry to win
- Employees can participate, but can’t win
- Contest ends 2:00pm on Thursday, September 3
- Check our sites Thursday afternoon to see if you’re the winner of 2 tickets to Wet ‘n Wild!
Good luck!
