Each week, Triad Goodwill will highlight someone who has achieved employment success, thanks to Goodwill.
Read Darrell Womble’s Success Story below…
One day while leaving the Goodwill retail store in Reidsville, something told me to check out the Goodwill Reidsville Community Resource Center building next door just to see what they had to offer. Upon entering the Center, Ms. Dot Dunlap greeted me and explained the job training services to me. I listened, then told her I was currently employed and left. Who knew in two months, I would be unemployed. So while I was trying to decide my next move, I remembered the Center. This time when I came into the Center, I told Ms. Dot I was unemployed. Her reply was “don’t worry, I’ve been there before and it’s going to be OK.”
She told me about the classes that were offered and some classes also offered at Rockingham Community College, a Goodwill partner. One of the classes offered, called Employability Skills class, caught my attention because I could learn to create a new resume as well as gain interviewing tips – so I signed up. Well I took the class, then sent my resume to a couple of employers and waited. While I waited, I continued to search for jobs in the Center’s Network Room where I could access the Internet and print and fax for free.
Then one day while searching www.TriadGoodwill.org, I saw that the Center was looking to hire a Community Resource Coordinator. I applied and was lucky enough to secure the job.
Now in my first three months as Coordinator at the Reidsville Community Resource Center as well as the new Center recently opened in Eden, this job has been as rewarding and fulfilling as I knew it would be. I enjoy meeting people and serving my community by offering valuable resources that I know will help them, because they helped me.

When Rev. Dr. Edgar J. Helms founded Goodwill Industries® in 1902, he couldn’t have envisioned our reliance on social media, nor the role it would play in educating the public about our mission. Yet, web sites, blogs, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and other new media have helped Goodwill® take its social entrepreneurship role to new heights.
Technology — once thought of as cold and impersonal — can actually make Goodwill’s mission more tangible and meaningful to you: our shoppers and donors, business and government partners.
The most dramatic example to date is the launch of the Donate Movement, around which people united for a common cause — protecting the environment through socially conscious donations. Goodwill’s groundbreaking Donation Impact Calculator (donate.goodwill.org) demonstrates the value of donations to the planet and to the people Goodwill serves through critical job training and career services. Another example is the My Story blog at www.goodwill.org/my-story. Through this blog and podcast, actual program participants tell their stories in their own words, conveying the difference Goodwill has made in their lives.
So while the Donation Impact Calculator can show you how much job training your old sweater or bicycle can fund or how many pounds of usable goods are diverted from landfill. My Story lets you see someone who has earned a job or overcome an obstacle that kept him or her from succeeding in the workplace. One of the success stories of local Triad residents includes Jessica, last year’s Michael W. Haley Graduate of the Year Award Winner. As a homeless mother of two young children, Jessica wanted to make a better life for herself and her family. Jessica utilized job training classes, the Network Room for job leads and sought the guidance and encouragement of Goodwill’s career consultants. Now Jessica is working full-time, has a new apartment and is an example to others, especially those that matter most – her children.
For the first week of May, which marks the 60th Anniversary of Goodwill Industries Week, agencies like Goodwill Industries of Central North Carolina, Inc. want to thank you again for the part you play in our history and in our future. Your continued support keeps alive a century-old vision that we all have a role to play in protecting the planet and transforming lives through the power of work.

Triad Goodwill
So it’s March and time to resurface from the cold and dark winter, draw open the curtains and put a spring shine on things. For those with pets, this can mean collecting 4 months of hair and dander from every surface of the house since Fido or Fluffy became primarily an indoor pet in November! It’s also time to make your annual pilgrimage to your basement or attic with all your clothing and household items your rotating out for the new season. Yes, “Out with the Old and in with the New” is never more true than at this time of year and the cool thing about Goodwill is that we offer a solution to do both! This year, the pleasure you feel after your work is done can triple, because not only are all your donations tax-deductible, but you can also pick up that first spring ensemble or that perfect vase for the kitchen table – items we get everyday at our retail stores.
During spring cleaning is always a great time to visit a Goodwill, and this year Triad Goodwill partners with Hanes and Levi’s in the Donate Movement! Hanes and Levi’s is helping Goodwill spread the story of our mission and to learn the difference your donations make, for the environment and for our communities. When people think twice about what they donate, where they donate and how their donations affect others – and when they donate to reputable organizations – that can have a powerful impact on our world. Triad Goodwill for almost 50 years has used donations to put people to work and your goodwill does make a difference. See donation tips here.
Join the Donate Movement and Clean Out Your Drawers for Goodwill and Hanes this spring! Plus see some great tips to get you started–
#1 Peace of Mind–Stop hoarding and feel, cool, calm and comfortable.
#2 It’s a Time Saver–It’s not functional to sift through mountains of clothing when you could be doing something else.
#3 Value–Spend your money of something you don’t have 15 pairs of already

“Bringing the Best You to the Interview” event makes a stronger connection
by Triad Goodwill
This week at Goodwill Industries’ Central Office, people paraded in the atrium showing off work appropriate outfits and make-up. They looked sharp in new suits, ties, heels and smiled with pride. The Greensboro Resource Center, in partnership with Macy’s, hosted the first “Bringing the Best You to the Interview” event. The event featured a fashion show, with visual do’s and don’ts of dressing for an interview. In addition, representatives from Deluxe Corporation, News & Record and Citi Card were on hand to give advice about their company’s dress codes, how to apply for jobs, and what employment opportunities were available. Unity Builders were also available to provide information on affordable housing.
According to Goodwill career developer/consultant, Gale Murphy, the event was an opportunity to give insight for the job preparedness class participants, and other job seekers to see that getting a job is more than what is on paper. “We wanted attendees to see and understand that getting a job offer or it being offered to someone else can sometimes come down to who has the more professional appearance and attitude.”
With a lagging economy, Goodwill Industries continues to serve those with barriers to employment. For those participating in the job preparedness class, once they graduate they will get 10 copies of their resume and a voucher to buy interview-appropriate outfits. The fashion show portion of the event demonstrated how affordable it is to shop at Goodwill Industries. A featured newly donated blue suit would sale for $7.50 at a Goodwill Industries’ Retail store. Goodwill not only wants to help you get that job, but look good doing it!
