Each week, Triad Goodwill will highlight someone who has achieved employment success, thanks to Goodwill.
Read Aaron Christopher’s Success Story below…
During a visit to the Goodwill retail store on North Elm street, Aaron discovered the Career Center. Engaged, he wanted to find a job in Charlotte closer to his fiancée. Since he didn’t own a home computer, he utilized the Career Center to search for jobs online. With center coordinator Heather Schneck’s help, he was able to get his résumé reviewed and uploaded to Internet job sites.
Within a week, Aaron was in Charlotte for three job interviews and was offered a job immediately in his field of automotive technology. He’s now starting his life in Charlotte – and Aaron is still getting calls for job interviews!

National Disability Employment Awareness Month,

Each day, Triad Goodwill benefits from the work of people with disabilities. We rely on talented professionals, including those with disabilities, to produce results and help us fulfill our mission of helping people in Alamance, Caswell, Guilford, Randolph and Rockingham counties find jobs and build their careers.
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. People with disabilities are productive and dependable workers, with higher rates of employee retention. They represent skilled employees in many industries but have higher rates of unemployment than the general population, at more than 16 percent[1].
Goodwill knows that businesses, government agencies and nonprofit organizations in the Triad need to hire the right workers to help our economy grow. Consider hiring people with disabilities. It might be the best investment you’ll make for your community!

As summer draws to a close, everyone is evaluating what they or their kids will need for this school year and heading to stores to purchase clothes, supplies, computers and more. And this year, people will take a careful look at what they already have before buying new items, according to the National Retail Federation 2011 Back-to-School survey conducted by BIGresearch. The administrators of the survey also found that “by shopping around at a variety of retailers before deciding where to buy, parents will be able to find the best values on the items they really need this year.”
At Triad Goodwill we couldn’t agree more. We know that families and individuals are still feeling the effects of a tough economy. Parents are being careful with their dollars and college students are doing their best to stretch their budgets. The National Retail Federation estimates that parents will spend an average of $603.63 on apparel, school supplies and electronics — just a few dollars off last year’s $606.40 average. In addition to being frugal, Triad Goodwill believes there’s another important lesson to learn this back-to-school season: caring for the community and our planet.
When families donate the things they don’t need or shop at Goodwill, people make the connection that their used items can help people in the community. Revenues from the sale of donated goods benefit Goodwill’s job training programs and support services, including financial education and computer training. Such programs allow people with disabilities, those who lack education or job experience and others facing challenges to finding employment the chance to obtain vocational training in order to find and keep good jobs. These jobs include such industries as computer programming, health care, green construction and other emerging fields. For a look at some success stories of people who have completed Triad Goodwill’s job training programs, click here.
By supporting Triad Goodwill this back-to-school season, college students and kids alike can expand their worldview and become more aware of the needs of others. The simple act of donating the things they no longer need is an act of charity that does not cost
any money and in which people of all ages can participate. Not only does donating to Goodwill help others, it also conserves the planet by diverting billions of donated goods from landfills.
Parents can teach their children the difference between the things you recycle and the things you donate to Goodwill, by playing the Donation Match Game at donate.goodwill.org/kids. Children receive a certificate upon finishing the game and can work with their families to find more items around the house to donate.
As everyone reviews their back-to-school budgets, we ask them to remember Triad Goodwill, not just as a shopping and donation destination, but also as an opportunity to teach a lesson of compassion that they can carry with them their entire lives.
Goodwill Industries of Central North Carolina, Inc. promotes the value of work by providing career development services and work opportunities for people with employment needs.

We are! In one month, after last year’s successful fashion show, Triad Goodwill is gearing up to Rock the Runway again with a bigger show and even bolder fashions that stock Goodwill retail stores year ’round! And this year, it’s all about the fun female – so we thought. After last night’s visit to High Point University to get our Tyra Banks on to find the perfect girls to model the Goodwill look, we found some man-candy we couldn’t resist so don’t miss out on trends for both gals and guys.
This year’s show will be held on the evening of February 24 in Downtown Greensboro’s Empire Room, so tell your girlfriends they’re in for a night of style with cocktails and conversation overlooking the center city skyline, and then a rockin’ runway show that will surprise even your biggest fashionista friend. Okay, okay so where can you get your ticks?? You can reserve your spot for $20/ 2 for $35 + 2 drink vouchers before 2/14 now at www.goodwillshow.org. After 2/14 get tickets for $20 pp. Plus your very own Rock the Runway souvenir T from one of Greensboro’s premier fashion events will be waiting for you for just $15.
